CarlisleCarlisle is considered the Capital of the Cumbria and is located north of the Lake District and 10 miles south of the Scottish border. Due to its location it became an important settlement strategically and the Romans made good use of it as it served the forts for Hadrian's wall which runs though the city. Carlisle Castle was built over 900 hundred years ago and has had an active life up until 1745. It was used by the border regiment up until 1959. Carlisle is the largest city in Cumbria and is in easy reach of major roads and train lines also offering an airport and a large number of shops, restaurants, public houses, museums making it an excellent base to explore this picturesque county. |
